The Legend of the Moorish Maiden Cássima: The Mystery of Loulé

Discover the legend of the Moorish maiden Cássima, one of Loulé's best-known stories, linked to three sisters, a fountain, and a spell that never ended.

Among the best-known legends of Loulé is the story of the Moorish maiden Cássima, a narrative linked to the period of the Christian conquest of the Algarve, an ancient fountain, and the fate of three sisters: Zara, Lídia, and Cássima.

Who was Cássima?

According to tradition, the Muslim governor of the Castle of Loulé had three daughters: Zara, Lídia, and Cássima. When he realized that the town was about to be taken by Christian forces, he decided to protect them from potential captivity.

The legend tells that the governor knew the arts of magic and took the three young women to a fountain on the outskirts of Loulé, where he left them enchanted, believing that he would return later to set them free.

The secret of the three loaves

Once in Tangier, the young women's father met a man from Loulé and asked for his help to break the spell. He gave him three loaves of bread, one for each daughter, which were to be thrown into the fountain on the night of Saint John while the young women's names were spoken.

But something went wrong. Before that night, the man's wife found the loaves and, out of curiosity, cut into one of them.

Two sisters freed and Cássima left behind

On the appointed night, Zara and Lídia managed to emerge from the fountain. Cássima, however, remained enchanted because the loaf corresponding to her had been damaged.

This is where the story takes on the mysterious tone that has made it so well-known. According to some versions of the tradition, Cássima remains trapped in the fountain and can still be heard or seen on certain nights.

The Cássima Fountain

The legend became so linked to the local identity that there is a Cássima Fountain (Fonte da Cássima) in Loulé, located in the northeastern part of the city.

The story was collected at the end of the 19th century by Francisco Xavier de Ataíde Oliveira, an author who recorded various legends of enchanted Moorish maidens in the Algarve.

A legend that remains alive in Loulé

More than a century after these collections, the Moorish maiden Cássima remains present in local culture. The Municipality of Loulé has integrated the story into the Mouras Encantadas (Enchanted Moorish Maidens) project, created to promote legends associated with the city's history and identity.

Between magic, memory, and oral tradition, the story of Cássima is an example of how the Algarve's Islamic past continues to be present in the popular imagination.
